By 1966 Monk was very much a statesman of Jazz — on the cover of Time, signed to Columbia, and at the peak of his live powers. Albums such as It's Monk's Time (1964) and Solo Monk (1966) were his biggest sellers, and he had toured Europe extensively. This was also the last period to catch Monk as a truly inspired live performer; by the 1970s he rarely performed.
