Cue Club Riots : Göteborg, 1966
Taking place across the weekend of 6–8 May 1966, the infamous ‘Mod Riots’ were sparked by the announcement that the Cue Club’s entertainment licence was unlikely to be renewed by Gothenburg City Council. Gothenburg’s youth weren’t taking this lying down — two nights of antagonism between young people and police ensued, resulting in minor damage and a large dose of respectable outrage.
It could be argued this was the nascence of youth’s direct action against authority — a confrontation that would become turbo-charged through the protests of the late 1960s and a counterculture that grew into an organised and sustainable movement.
