By 1966 Monk was a statesman of Jazz — on the cover of Time, signed to Columbia, and at the peak of his live powers. Albums such as It’s Monk’s Time (1964), Misterioso (1965) and Solo Monk (1966) were his biggest sellers. It was also the last period to catch him as a live musician — by the 1970s he rarely performed.
