An iconic feature of Gothenburg, the first tram line was started in 1879 — a horse-drawn tramway stretching from Brunnsparken to Stigbergsliden. There were plans in the 1960s to convert the tram system to an underground network, but due to the clay soil, this was seen as too costly. A reprieve that has surely become an urban asset, as many other European cities try to reconfigure their transport systems, using trams to negate the presence of cars in their city centres.
