Håkan Hellström : Göteborg, 2000
Occupying a unique sweet spot few artists attain, Håkan is both a massive commercial success and critically acclaimed in Sweden. His star has not burned as brightly outside his Northern Light for one simple reason — he does not sing in English. But like Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel or Serge Gainsbourg, the power of his music only really hits home in his native voice.
Inimitably connected with Gothenburg, Håkan was voted Gothenburg Citizen of the Year in 2001. From his early days with Broder Daniel, he continues to work with a host of Gothenburg musicians — Soundtrack of Our Lives, Veronica Maggio, The Stoner and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. A city that forms the backdrop to many of his videos, it is no overstatement to describe Gothenburg as the muse to Håkan’s art.
