Göteborg Soul & Jazz Soundmap — Limited Edition Print
Gothenburg's engagement with the music of the American dispossessed goes back a long way — from New Orleans Jazz and the big band era through to Bop, the latest transatlantic innovations flowed into the port city where avid music fans were eager to hear and learn. There was also a political dimension: representing the music of America's oppressed, Jazz was seen by many of Sweden's youth as a more worthy alternative to Rock N Roll.
The soundmap charts venues from early Jazz clubs of the 40s and 50s such as Club Bohemia, through Art Dur in the 60s and 70s, to current venues such as Unity Jazz Club, Utopia Jazz, Klubb Impuls and the Gothenburg institution that is Nefertiti. Alongside Jazz, Soul has always had an audible presence — from the groundbreaking G Club in the 1960s and DJ Clem Dalton's exclusive Soul imports at the Pop-In, through to respected Northern Soul and Rare Soul clubs such as On The Real Side and Soulastatic keeping the faith.
