The daddy in the development of Free Jazz and Spiritual Jazz in the 1960’s, Pharoah showed no signs of slowing down when he played this Gothenburg gig in 2003. In that year he released With A Heartbeat with Graham Haynes, an ambient sound exploration based on heartbeat sounds recorded by Dr. Jean-Louis Zink. While that was greeted with mixed reviews his live album The Creator Has a Master Plan, recorded in Japan, saw Pharoah on more familiar territory and was generally more favourably received.

The date also coincided with his appearance at a number of high-profile festivals, as Pharoah continued to achieve accolades and awards throughout the 00’s and 2010’s rightly celebrating his groundbreaking influence on music. His final release Promises (2022) with Floating Points was every bit as fiercely original as any of his work. A fitting epitaph to a true and much missed original.
