An iconic feature of Gothenburg, the first tram line was started in 1879, a horse-drawn tramway which stretched from Brunnsparken to Stigbergsliden. There were plans in the 1960s to convert the tram system to an underground network, but due to the clay soil, this was seen as being too costly.
