Herbie Hancock : Göteborg, 1979
On stage in 1979, Herbie found himself in a unique place — crossing over to a larger disco audience through Sunlight (1978) and Feet Don’t Fail Me Now (1979), while remaining a founding figure of jazz funk alongside artists like Donald Byrd. He even had hit singles with ‘You Bet Your Love’ and ‘I Thought It Was You’. Much to critics’ chagrin, Hancock continued to furrow new and often commercial paths — recording with Simple Minds and Arcadia, and in 1983 scoring a Grammy with ‘Rockit’, considered the first ever jazz hip-hop track. To see Hancock in 1979 was to hear a musician unbound by labels and genres.
