Göteborg Beat & Psych Soundmap — Limited Edition Print
When the Beatles rolled into town, performing three shows at Lorensbergs Cirkus on 27th October 1963, Göteborg never really looked back. A port city with transatlantic shipping connections importing rare Rock N Roll and R&B records, a club network quickly sprung up around the city's proliferating beat bands. The Cue Club, Klubb Karl, Globe Club and Yaki-Da became focal points, nurturing homegrown talent such as Tages, Doris med Plums and the Spotnicks, while hosting the best of British beat — The Animals, Small Faces, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Spencer Davis Group among them.
From Beat beginnings these clubs also became important in the development of Prog — music more focused on cultural, social and political questions directly engaged with Sweden. The map also charts important civic losses: the original Cue Club and many other venues were bulldozed to make way for the Nordstan shopping complex, demolished in the name of a 'progress' that has been re-evaluated ever since.
