Following Sun Ra’s death in 1993, Marshall Allen became the custodian of Ra’s music. Having worked with Sun Ra since the late 1950’s he set up the Arkestra and has continued to tour, spreading the vision and message of Sun Ra to this day. It’s a message many would have missed during Sun Ra’s lifetime. He rarely performed outside the United States, and through his mechanism of self-releasing his material, selling it exclusively at his gigs, barely had a chance to hear it.

2016, the year of this Arkestra gig, was a busy one. It was the 60th Anniversary of Sun Ra’s birth and they performed at major festivals, as well as doing a raft of European and Global performances, which this Nefartiti gig was one.

Nefartiti

Born out of association Jazz in Gothenburg take over the jazz club Artdur on Hvitfeldtsplatsen 1978, the venue was renamed Nefertiti. Set up on a more commercial footing from 1982, it has continued to be at the forefront of Jazz in the city, as well as being the home for global rhythms and Underground and leftfield music.
