A stone cold gem. The kind of record that's as wonderful as it is rare! Billy Martin's a trumpeter with a heck of a lot of soul and he's working here in a sweet funky east coast style, blowing and singing with a wicked groove that's got lots of funky 45 touches, yet which has also been laid out to wax in longer takes allowing the grooves to open up a bit more.
The album's worth it alone for Billy's incredible cover of "I Turned You On" -- a cover of the mighty Isleys tune that's supported by some fiercely funky drums that snap all over the place, and make the single groove even harder than the original version! The whole album's great, though, with a real "soul party" sort of feel -- and titles include "Funky Feelin", "It's Your Life", "One More Time", and "Baby I'm For Real".
