Jazz clubs appeared in the city as early as the 1920s. Gothenburg, as a port city with substantive maritime links to the United States, had an exposure to these new transatlantic sounds. With a steady influx of records, live performances followed. People such as Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Horace Silver and Dizzie Gillespie were a cornerstone of Liseberg’s summer concert programming. Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock were booked for large and prestigious venue of Konserthus. Players like Dexter Gordon jammed after hours in venues such as Art Dur. And let’s It’s not forgot the prodigious Jazz talent that Sweden has produced in such notable names as Arne Domnérus, Jan Allan, Lennart Åberg, Georg Riedel and Jan Johansson.
These five postcards of Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra and Herbie Hancock chart five pivotal Jazz performances in the city.
